Short Description: This text stems from the curiosity to understand how the public utility bodies, the cantonal and municipal administrations of the Canton of Ticino, the Bishops, the Prelates and the Parishes of the Diocese of Lugano, marked their correspondence intended for the higher authorities or private individuals. In our Canton, until the end of the nineteenth century, these correspondences enjoyed the “postage allowance”, that is, they were exempt from the payment of the postal port. The main purpose of using seals and stamps was to make the document or letter official. The seal stamped on sealing wax or on a paper seal was to guarantee the Secrecy of the document. The result of this long, but interesting research involved the consultation in the Historical Archives of the Diocese of Lugano, of about 70,000 letters, copy-letters and documents, preserved in 1,031 archival boxes (folders), ordered according to the name of the parishes.
