Short Description: An English steamship company, the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, began operating along the Pacific coast of South America in 1840. This work analyzes the company’s operations, focusing on the steamers that transported merchandise, passengers, and – of particular interest here – mail correspondence, as well as the first postal markings used between 1840 and 1854, when they were discontinued. It also examines the letter rates applied by the company as payment for its services, the various ports of call of its steamships, and all aspects related to the postal systems of the countries involved: Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.
