Short Description: When the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed on 17 March 1861, postal legislation provided for different rates for the various provinces that comprised the kingdom. Furthermore, the postal conventions of the Kingdom of Sardinia had not yet been extended to all the new provinces of the Kingdom of Italy. For these reasons, we have decided to illustrate the rates from the Kingdom of Italy to foreign countries effective 1 January 1863, since from that date, Law No. 604 of May 5, 1862, unified the Italian postal system by establishing a single postal regulation for all the provinces that constituted the kingdom. Our examination of rates from Italy to foreign countries extends to 31 March 1879, before the entry into force of the UPU (Universal Postal Union) convention.
