Short Description: In the 1830s and 1840s, the Danube Steam Navigation Company (DDSG) expanded its activity into the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean. The Austrian Lloyd soon joined the DDSG on many of the same routes. The rivalry of these two companies lasted for 10 years and ended when the Austrian Lloyd purchased the maritime assets of the DDSG. The book follows the rivalry of the two companies amid important historical events of the period, providing an abundance of newly discovered information for the analysis of the postal history of both companies.
