Short Description: From the end of 17th century, the letters from Ottoman Albania addressed to foreign European centres were mainly sent by religious missions, diplomats, traders and soldiers operating in this region bordering West and East. On 19th century, the first postal consular office operating in Albania was opened on Austrian initiative (1820), followed by the first Ottoman P.O. opened in Shkoder (1849). In 1854 the Austrian Postal Administration opened its first P.O.s in Ottoman Albania (Antivari, Durazzo and Valona) and distributed there its first stamps issued for the Levant in 1863.
